Learn to tow and reverse your horse trailer safely and confidently with practical, hands-on horse trailer towing training in Farnborough.
Whether you’re preparing to tow your horse for the first time, returning to towing after a break, or simply want more confidence with reversing and manoeuvring, the course is tailored to your experience and the vehicle and trailer you’ll be using.
Towing a horse requires particular care. Unlike an ordinary load, your horse is standing throughout the journey and constantly adjusting its balance, making smooth acceleration, progressive braking, careful cornering and good forward planning especially important.
Our practical training will help you develop the skills and confidence to tow safely and smoothly before heading out on the road with your horse.
Since the B+E driving test requirement was removed in 2021, most drivers no longer need to pass a separate test before towing. However, professional training remains a sensible way to develop the practical skills and confidence needed before towing a horse on the road.
What You’ll Learn
Our horse trailer towing courses are practical and hands-on, giving you the opportunity to develop the skills needed to tow your horse safely, smoothly and confidently.
During your course, you’ll cover:
- Basic vehicle and trailer safety checks
- Safe hitching and unhitching
- Correct loading and weight distribution
- Reversing skills and techniques
- Trailer positioning and manoeuvring
- Smooth acceleration, braking and cornering
- On-road towing techniques
- Defensive driving and hazard awareness
- Improving trailer stability and control
All practical training takes place at our spacious tarmac training ground in Farnborough, close to Junction 4 of the M3, giving you plenty of room to practise reversing and manoeuvring before heading out onto the road.
Our horse trailer towing lessons are ideal for horse owners travelling to us from across Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire, including nearby areas such as Aldershot, Farnham, Guildford and Woking.
Training Vehicle & Horse Trailer
Training is carried out using Matt’s Ifor Williams HB505 horse trailer, giving you the opportunity to learn and practise without needing to bring your own trailer.
Where possible, we recommend using your own tow vehicle for the training. This helps you become familiar with the vehicle you’ll actually be using, including its controls, visibility and how it handles with a trailer attached.
If you don’t yet have a suitable tow vehicle, that’s no problem. Matt’s 2021 SsangYong Rexton can also be used for the training at no additional cost.
Qualified, Professional Horse Trailer Towing Training
Your training is carried out by an experienced and qualified towing instructor, approved by the Safe Towing Scheme and DIA, as well as a DVSA Fleet Driver Trainer.
Training is normally carried out on a 1-to-1 basis, giving you plenty of hands-on time to practise the skills you need. Particular attention can be given to the areas you find most difficult, whether that’s reversing, manoeuvring, hitching or becoming more confident towing on the road.
If two people would like to train together, joint bookings are also available. This is particularly useful for couples, partners or family members who will both be towing the same horse trailer.
The result is a highly practical course tailored to your experience, confidence level and the vehicle and trailer you’ll be using.
Availability changes frequently, but as a general guide, please allow around 2 weeks. If you need training sooner — perhaps before collecting a new trailer, transporting your horse or attending an upcoming event — Matt will always try to accommodate you where possible.

Course Duration & Cost
Our standard Horse Trailer Towing Course is a comprehensive, hands-on session tailored to your experience, confidence level and the type of towing you’ll be doing.
- Duration: 3.5 to 4.5 hours of practical, hands-on 1-to-1 training.
- Private individuals: £300
- Joint bookings: £400 for two people training together — ideal if you’ll both be towing the horse trailer.
