Whether you need a C1 licence for work, to drive a 7.5-tonne vehicle, motorhome or horsebox, Matt provides practical one-to-one training designed to prepare you properly for your DVSA practical tests.

Training is carried out in an automatic C1 training vehicle, giving you maximum driving time without sharing the vehicle with another candidate. If you already hold a manual car licence, passing your C1 test in an automatic will still give you a manual C1 entitlement.

What is a Category C1 licence?

A Category C1 licence allows you to drive vehicles with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of more than 3,500kg and up to 7,500kg.

Typical C1 vehicles include:

  • Ambulances
  • 7.5-tonne goods vehicles
  • Larger motorhomes
  • Horseboxes
  • Recovery vehicles
  • Removal and delivery vehicles

A Category C1 licence normally allows you to tow a trailer up to 750kg MAM. If you need to tow a heavier trailer with a C1 vehicle, you will normally need Category C1E entitlement.

Getting Your C1 Licence – The Process

Getting your Category C1 licence involves a few steps before you can take the practical tests. Here’s how the process works:

1. Apply for your provisional C1 entitlement
Complete the D2 application form and arrange the required D4 medical examination.

2. Pass your theory tests
Once your provisional entitlement has been added to your licence, you’ll need to pass the relevant theory tests before taking your practical driving tests.

3. Complete your practical C1 driver training
Matt will prepare you for both the reversing exercise and the on-road driving test, with practical training carried out on a one-to-one basis.

4. Pass Module 3a – Reversing
The off-road reversing exercise is carried out at a DVSA-approved site. Matt carries out your training and another authorised trainer conducts the test, in accordance with DVSA requirements.

5. Pass Module 3b – On-road driving
Your on-road test is taken in the Guildford area. Training includes test preparation, vehicle control, observation, positioning, hazard awareness and familiarisation with the types of roads and situations you may encounter.

DVSA rules state that if you hold a manual car licence, you can take your C1 test in an automatic and gain manual C1 licence!

C1 Course Options & Pricing

As an independent training provider, you’ll deal directly with Matt throughout your training. Course prices are clearly shown below and include your DVSA practical test fees.

Our packages are fully transparent and include your DVSA practical test fees:

Standard Course — £1100

  • Best for: Confident, regular car drivers (e.g., motorhome owners or private horsebox drivers).
  • What’s Included: 12 hours of  1-to-1 practical training, usually spread over two days (whenever test slots allow), and DVSA practical test fees.

Extended Course — £POA

  • Best for: Drivers who want extra confidence, have limited driving experience since passing their car test, or want additional time behind the wheel.
  • What’s Included: Additional practical training hours tailored entirely around your specific needs. Includes DVSA practical test fees.

Pass Protection Add-On — £200 

Available to purchase at the time of booking. If you don’t pass your practical exam first time, Pass Protection covers an additional two hours of 1-to-1 training and a full DVSA re-test.

Do I need Driver CPC?

If you are going to be driving the vehicle for hire, reward or for commercial purposes (for instance for work), you must also pass Modules 2 and 4 to complete the driver CPC initial qualification. You will be issued with a driver qualification card which must be carried at all times when driving. Module 2 is carried out at a theory test centre and Module 4 is carried out in-house.

If you do not intend to drive the vehicle for hire or reward, or your use of the vehicle is exempt from Driver CPC, you only need to complete the relevant theory tests (Modules 1A & 1B) and practical tests (Modules 3A & 3B). For example, Driver CPC is not required for NHS ambulance driving, driving a motorhome for private use, or driving a private horse lorry.
